“VOICES From Migrations” is a project co-funded by the European Union exploring untold migration stories. Xhulio moved from Albania to Greece in 1999. This is his story:
“My name is Xhulio Rrasa, and I’m 30 years old. I was born in Elbasan, Albania, but in reality, my life began in Greece. I came here when I was only four years old, so the memories I have from my homeland are limited, only holidays and family visits. I grew up in Larissa, where I still live permanently, while I currently study in Thessaloniki.
My family has always been a simple, everyday family: my father, my mother, my sister, and me. My parents made the decision to leave everything behind, as many parents do, hoping to offer their children more opportunities and a better future.
I don’t have clear images from the journey. What I remember feels more like scattered moments, a sense of movement, of change, something like a new beginning, though I was too young to understand what was really happening.
My earliest memories of Greece are from the village where we settled. I remember the people being warm and friendly, welcoming us with kindness and genuine interest. They truly wanted to help us find our footing, and that made our adjustment much easier. I didn’t face any particular difficulties that left a mark on me. Even the procedures for residence permits felt like just another part of everyday life, nothing that seemed overwhelming. In the area where we settled, we were the first from our extended family to arrive in Greece.
Over the years, we kept in touch with the relatives who stayed behind. My grandmother, my
uncles, and my aunts are always there waiting for us whenever we visit, usually once or twice a
year. I enjoy seeing them, but I don’t think I would ever move back permanently. My life and
everything that defines me is here in Greece.”

«Ονομάζομαι Xhulio Rrasa και είμαι τριάντα χρονών. Γεννήθηκα στο Elbasan της Αλβανίας, αλλά ουσιαστικά η ζωή μου ξεκίνησε στην Ελλάδα. Ήρθα εδώ όταν ήμουν μόλις τεσσάρων ετών, τόσο μικρός που οι μνήμες μου από την πατρίδα περιορίζονται στις γιορτές και στις οικογενειακές επισκέψεις. Μεγάλωσα στη Λάρισα, όπου μένω μόνιμα μέχρι σήμερα, ενώ σπουδάζω στη Θεσσαλονίκη.
Η οικογένειά μου ήταν πάντα μια απλή, καθημερινή οικογένεια: ο πατέρας μου, η μητέρα μου, η αδερφή μου κι εγώ. Οι γονείς μου πήραν την απόφαση να αφήσουν πίσω όσα γνώριζαν, όπως κάνουν πολλοί γονείς, με στόχο να μας προσφέρουν περισσότερες ευκαιρίες και ένα καλύτερο μέλλον.
Από το ταξίδι δεν έχω ξεκάθαρες εικόνες. Ό,τι θυμάμαι μοιάζει περισσότερο με αποσπασματικές στιγμές — μία αίσθηση μετακίνησης, αλλαγής, κάτι διαφορετικό που ξεκινούσε, χωρίς όμως να μπορώ να το συνειδητοποιήσω τότε. Ήμουν πολύ μικρός για να καταλάβω τι ακριβώς συνέβαινε.
Οι πρώτες εικόνες που έχω από την Ελλάδα είναι από το χωριό όπου εγκατασταθήκαμε. Θυμάμαι τους ανθρώπους να είναι ζεστοί και φιλικοί, να μας καλωσορίζουν με ενδιαφέρον και καλοσύνη. Πραγματικά ήθελαν να μας βοηθήσουν να σταθούμε στα πόδια μας, κι αυτό έκανε την προσαρμογή μας πολύ πιο εύκολη. Δεν αντιμετώπισα κάποιο ιδιαίτερο πρόβλημα που να με σημάδεψε. Ακόμη και οι διαδικασίες για τα χαρτιά και την παραμονή ήταν απλά ένα κομμάτι της καθημερινότητας — τίποτα που να μου φάνηκε πραγματικά δύσκολο. Στην περιοχή ήμασταν οι πρώτοι από την οικογένειά μας που εγκαταστάθηκαν εδώ.
Με τα χρόνια, διατηρήσαμε επαφή με τους συγγενείς που έμειναν πίσω. Η γιαγιά, οι θείοι και οι θείες μας περιμένουν κάθε φορά που πηγαίνουμε για επίσκεψη, συνήθως μία ή δύο φορές τον χρόνο. Μου αρέσει να τους βλέπω, αλλά δεν νομίζω ότι θα επέστρεφα μόνιμα στην Αλβανία. Η ζωή μου —όλα όσα με καθορίζουν— είναι εδώ.»
