The “VOICES From Migrations” project shows high school students the personal side of migration

21 March 2026: In honor of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, selected high schools across Greece, Italy, and Belgium opened their classrooms to VOICES From Migrations - a EU-funded project bringing together university students and migrant citizens in a shared effort of remembrance, dialogue, and inclusion.
Participating schools hosted a special screening of the new “VOICES” video feature, depicting the lived experiences of 13 migrant citizens. Their stories span decades, from the 1950s to the present day, offering a rich and nuanced portrait of migration in Europe. The profuction highlights its protagonists in all their diversity; from contemporary accounts of resilience and courage to personal reflections on identity, family, and navigating life between cultures.
At a time when migrants are often excluded from shaping their own narratives, and where stereotypes and misinformation still persist, initiatives like this play a vital role in restoring agency and visibility. Through these testimonies, and the work of the students who recorded and preserved them, younger generations are invited into perspectives that are often overlooked. The result? A more informed and empathetic understanding of both the challenges and the opportunities that define migration experiences.
Across all schools, the screening were complemented by interactive activities, including guest speakers from migrant backgrounds, quizzes to engage students’ prior knowledge, and open discussions on how to create inclusive environments where everyone feels safe and welcome - no matter their ethnicity or country of origin.
A COLLECTIVE ACCOMPLISHMENT
The initiative stands as a testament to the dedication of the VOICES participants: university students across Europe who put themselves to the test by conducting challenging interviews in different languages. Equally central are the migrant citizens who chose to share their stories, contributing to a growing archive that will inform and inspire future generations.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR VOICES
The project will continue in Rosarno from 21 to 24 May, where students, migrant communities, and policymakers will come together once again in a celebration of diversity and integration. The program will feature an international conference implementing the project’s Local Action Plan Against Racism and for Integration, alongside a vibrant Multicultural Festival celebrating “VOICES” through food, music, and shared experiences.
Together, these moments will build on the project’s core ambition: transforming personal stories into collective action and meaningful change.
